Introduction to Business Intelligence in simple language

I always get many requests to teach and guide people about how to start a career in the Business Intelligence domain or what tool I should study. There is one main question from all and that is 'where should we start?' That is the reason I got inspired to write this blog.

I have been working in this domain for many years and the most important thing I learned to became a good Business Intelligence developer is 'Vision towards your data'. It is always about the data! As we know in this digital age we collect a tremendous amount of data every second. And all you need to know about the business is in the data that you have received. To have that vision towards the data first you need to know What is Business Intelligence? and Why Business Intelligence?

What is Business Intelligence?

If we break this word 'Business Intelligence' into two then, Business tells us about your work, trade, sales, employees, and numerous perspectives of your business which we store in the form of data. In simple words, it is the 'Data about your Business'. Now if we want to put this data into use we need to apply some techniques or practices to get a productive output. This is called applying 'Intelligence to your data' or altogether 'Business Intelligence.'

Why Business Intelligence?

I would like to explain to you the why term with a simple example: Suppose we have two restaurants in our locality A and B. A is a normal restaurant which does not store there daily data, expenses or sale. On the other hand restaurant B store all the data on their computers on daily basis. If we have data we can use it to solve their future problems based on their past data analysis. For example, what time the restaurant is most crowded? result - we need more waiters at that time or About customer's food preferences in different seasons? result - people eat mangoes maximum in summer so we can arrange our food supplies accordingly. So such decisions or predictions can be made if we have data and apply Business Intelligence to it. Eventually, restaurant B will grow faster because of better decisions than restaurant A. That is the reason Business Intelligence is important.

Conclusion:

In technical terms with the right information at right time and in the right format can lead to better strategic, tactical, and operational decisions which in the due course adds up for the growth of the company. This is called Business Intelligence. It will provide us with all the small business insights which we usually ignore. Help us to take faster and relevant decisions.
