Qlikview Business Intelligence Reporting Tool Overview

All the basic things you need to know about Qlikview are on this page. If you wish to learn anything new always start with three questions What? Why? and How? I call it my 'WWH'. Let us start with the first W.

What is Qlikview?

Qlikview is a Business Intelligence reporting tool. The important features you require to know about Qlikview are:
  1. Association Rule: Enables real-time associative search and analysis. It works like a human brain it creates its own associations. It gives us in-depth insights into the data that amaze us.
  2. Multiple Data source connectivity: Easily consolidate multiple data sources.
  3. In Memory processing: Loads all data into in-memory.
  4. Data compression: Massive data compression (10-to-1).
  5. Create dynamic graphs and tables.
  6. Qlikview has two proprietary file formats QVW(Qlikview workbook) and QVD(Qlikview data).
  7. Qlikview is a product of the Qlik community. Qlik also has one more product called Qlik Sense. Qlikview is the first generation analytics platform. Qlik Sense offers modern analytic solutions.

Why Qlikview?

It makes your life easy! A business intelligence developer knows how painful and time-consuming is to create a relationship model with correct relations in a data warehouse. Imagine if all this is possible within a few clicks! Also, numerous data source connections, compressed storage, and in-memory processing help us to develop the requirement faster and better in Qlikview. What else we need?

How Qlikview works?

The complete dashboard development process in Qlikview is divided into three parts: Creation of sheet and sheet objects also called Charts and Graph, QlikView scripting for loading data, and dashboard publishing and managing.

The architecture of Qlikview that describes the complete flow of a Qlikview document is as shown in below diagram:

As shown in the above diagram we have three layers in the architecture. the first layer consists of all the different data sources. In the second layer, we create the complete dashboard in 'Qlikview Desktop Application' and store it in the QVW and QVD file formats that are published with 'Qlikview Publisher'. In the third layer, we have 'Qlikview Server' where the QlikView files are published and accessible to the end-user through the 'Qlikview Access point' on a browser.

Qlikview Desktop Application: It is a software that allows loading data from different data sources and relate them with associative rules and create dynamic graphs and tables from processed data.
Qlikview Publisher: it acts as a mediator between Qlikview desktop and Qlikview Server.
Qlikview Server: It is a platform named as Qlikview management console where we can publish, manage access and schedule our Qlikview documents. It has many other features.
Qlikview Access point: It is a Qlikview site that contains all published QVW files for end-user access.

Associative colors:

Following is a sample Qlikview dashboard that will give you an idea of how it looks. the three colors help us to understand the association they are: Green, White, and Grey. Green for selected, White for related values, and Grey for unrelated values. These colors change dynamically based on your selection and dashboard.

Qlikview Script:

All data is loaded in Qlikview with the Qlikview script. There are different type of load scripts which is required to load the data in Qlikview desktop and convert into Qlikview format as QVD. the following diagram will show the edit query interface.

This blog will touch base on almost all the important topics in brief about Qliview, Hope you find it helpful. Happy learning!
